decoration by young people builds and rebuilds ownership
Our design principles – your guarantee
Youth shelters have to compete with the places 12-16 years olds meet now or nothing will change.
This means successful youth shelter design has to replicate the essential characteristics of the places young people tend to adopt. These include somewhere they feel safe with some degree of weather protection, somewhere to sit and some form of lighting.
Our youth shelter designs reconcile these requirements with the need for the youth shelter to attract and withstand the attention of teenagers. They also address the inherent conflict in youth shelter design between ‘shelter’ and ‘surveillance’.
We take safety seriously. Our primary design objective is to ensure young people are safe. If the design or construction of their youth shelter puts them at risk or makes them feel unsafe they will abandon it in favour of the places they meet now and money and time will be wasted.
